The University of Wisconsin–Superior’s Bachelor of Science in exercise science has been elevated from a concentration to a stand-alone major, enhancing the program’s visibility and providing clearer recognition of students’ expertise for both employers and graduate programs. The program is offered both on campus and online.

Experiential learning remains a cornerstone of the major, providing students with hands-on training through labs, practicum experiences and fieldwork placements. Opportunities include on-campus placements with Yellowjacket Athletics(opens in a new tab) and numerous regional health and fitness organizations, including Essentia Health, Aspirus/St. Luke’s, the YMCA and local and fitness facilities. Additional learning experiences are available in allied health clinic settings such as physical therapy, athletic training, chiropractic care and occupational therapy.

“The field of exercise science continues to experience strong workforce demand, and many of our students pursue advanced degrees in physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, exercise physiology, and related allied health disciplines,” said Kim LeBard Rankila, associate professor and Health and Human Performance department chair. “This program change will enhance the visibility and recognition of our program while ensuring that graduates can clearly communicate the value of their degree to employers and graduate schools.”

Faculty members regularly consult with community health partners to ensure that curriculum, equipment and hands-on laboratory and experiential learning align with current professional and clinical standards. These partnerships help prepare students for careers and graduate study in exercise science and related health fields by emphasizing practical skills alongside academic knowledge.
